1985 Pontiac Fiero GT - $800 (Rutledge, TN)
1985 Pontiac Fiero
The car: a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT with a 350 V8 engine installed. The transmission is the stock Pontiac manual trans, which was an M17 4 speed Muncie. Originally this car was thought to be built using an Archie kit, but having crawled underneath it to take some additional pictures, my opinion is that the conversion was a home fabrication by the previous owner. Asking price is $800 obo. (The pics of the undercarriage/cradle were taken with my phone. I noticed that the Craigslist listing blows them up to the size of the others which pixellates and distorts them. If you need to see these clearly, let me know and I'll email them to you.)
The story: My father purchased this car sometime around 1998/99 in Midland, Michigan. In order to get it home, he tried to rent a tow dolly, but apparently the ground effects on the Fiero interfered with the dolly, so he ended up driving it. All went pretty well driving from Michigan to Tennessee, except a handful of planned stops to let the cooling system have a break, as it hadn't/hasn't been updated to support a V8. After that many miles, and within a mile or two of home, the engine had a very small fire which burned the wiring at the top of the motor, and not really much more, as there is just a small amount of evidence on the deck lid (or hood in this case) and back window of a fire. Anyhow, that seemed to be it for my father and the V8 Fiero project. I encouraged him to have it taken on a flatbed to his mechanic to sort out the wiring, but he never did. It has sat since then virtually untouched. So, this is another case of a car that "ran when parked", but it would be affected by all the problems a car would when not put in hibernation properly. I would assume that this mostly affects the fuel system, but your knowledge is likely deeper than mine as to what systems time takes it's toll on.
Cosmetically the car is in fair/good condition. The former owner gave it a quickie yellow spray job over the original red, which is very evident in some places such as the door jambs and the top of the fenders. The interior is in fair/good condition as well. The most noticeable flaw is a large burn hole in the driver's seat. The front parking lamps have been removed, but are in the trunk and the left front marker light is unscrewed and hanging from it's wire. Also, the passenger door comes in contact with the right fender (see pic).
As I see it, the value in this car lies in that the engine cradle has been modified to fit a V8, and that the body modifications have been done in the engine compartment for the V8 to fit as well. This could also be a very good parts donor car for another project Fiero. If/when finished, this could be a very fun car to own and drive, but right now it's in the "before" stage. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability and in as timely a manner as possible. Please respond via email through Craigslist. If phone conversation is required, I will provide my number via email as well. Thanks very much for looking.
Just two footnotes - in the pictures, the car is on wheel dollies. These are for the car to be moved around the garage when necessary and are not included with the sale of the car. Also, The car will be sold with a bill of sale as the title was lost.
